Varying the link text is a smart thing to do!

By Mike Liebner • on February 24, 2010

Do you vary your link text???

I was just asked about varying the link text when using using the Article Underground “announcements blogs” to get links to a page.  Does each “keyword phrase” require it’s own MATCHING article???

In brief – ideally YES! But let’s try to understand this whole thing of linking smart!

In the past I have written that it is smart to vary your link text (and eat your vegetables too!).

I wrote it because I know some people think if they HAMMER the same LINK TEXT over and over they will get to number one… Initially that may be true – but as time goes on if you only use IDENTICAL LINK TEXT over and over – you will drop like a bucket of lead when Google starts to see the patterns.

It may take a while before they figure it out and drop your position down the page – but they are smart! They will figure it out!

The solution is soooo simple! Vary your link text.

I understand it may be confusing – but the main thing to consider is that you want to avoid doing things like a machine or a robot.

Try to act HUMAN and not create patterns and repetitive strings that scream out “something smells fishy”.

So when I say “vary your link text”, what I really mean is USE MORE OF THE WORDS that are on your page and don’t just use the SAME ONE keyword phrase over and over in the link text.

And what about the pages your links are on??? Does this apply to them too???

It is always good to create unique POSTS on the AU BLOGS that point back at the your web page you are trying to rank for.

The links will have more value.

So if possible – do it!

At the very least – don’t use identical “exact duplicate content” or articles.

Tweak and modify them at least a little!

Reposting the same article over and over would be as bad as mas submitting an article to the article directories which all have the same links in the bio box.

That can hurt you big time when Google sees hundreds or thousands of identical articles in directories all pointing to you with same exact bio box and links.

They’re samrt. They know those kinds of links don’t really have much value.

You do not need to TRICK them to get a top ranking. A few good links from the Article Announcements blogs and you’ll be golden!

So – don’t try to do that automated spammy stuff with the AU Blogs – they’re too good for that! You have GOLD at your finger tips – so take advantage of the true power and VARY YOUR LINK TEXT and vary your blog posts!

If you want TOP RANKINGS – it’s simple – get the highest quality links you can pointing at your pages!

Every page you want to focus on needs to be optimized for a PRIMARY KEYWORD and at least ONE SECONDARY keyword.

How many secondary keywords depends on how many GOOD keywords you have on your page. These are the natural words to target – regardless of varying link text strategies – start with what is already on your page!

FACT: Did you know that some web pages that have LOTS of great related keywords will rank on top of Google for 100’s or even 1,000’s of keyword phrases???

The words that appear on your pages are ones you should be using in your link text. It’s natural for Google to rank you for those words – especially when they see the tex links coming from quality web sites! HOME RUN!

USE the AUKDAT TOOL to see what keywords appear prominently on your page and target those keywords with TEXT LINKS on the Article Underground blogs and on th social bookmarking sites and such.

I usually look for 2 and 3 word phrases that appear at least 3 times on the page. 2 times at the minmum. ONE occurance is generally not enough – add the PHRASE a few more times if it only appears one time and if you want to rank for it.

It’s more difficult to rank for a keyword that only appears one time on your page. It’s even harder to rank for a keyword that does not appear… but that said – it does happen! That’s how powerful LINK TEXT can be!

Every text link that appears externally on web pages (and internally too) for that page will reinforce with Google the KEYWORD PHRASE your page is about and they will start ranking you for the keywords they see in the text links – especially when they see the words are on your pages too!

Link text is important but so are the words that apeear before and after them… Surrounding words play a part in how they rank you too!

The search engines do not only look at the words in the LINK TEXT pointing at your page – they also look at the words that are on the page near the text links. Surrounding words matter too – not just the link text!

After all – wouldn’t you trust the LINK TEXT more if it were from a page that was TRUSTED for that topic??? Try to think as if you were Google.

So if you want more traffic from more top rankinghs for tons of different keywords – it’s simply a matter of doing a little extra work! Get out there and vary the link text and also the content/articles/posts that have links to your pages! This will help you to get the most results from your efforts!

It’s easy to get top rankings when you go about it sensibly and use the Article Underground announcements blogs the way they are meant to be used!

Thanks for another great article. It seems the overriding objective is make sure everything you do is “natural” or appears natural in the eyes of Google. They simply dont like artificial attempts to improve rankings so the smart thing to do is to use various link text just like you would expect to occur naturally as people link to your pages.

Excellent article about link text, Mike! Thanks. It is well worth the effort to pay close attention to this aspect. Variation in the wording is crucial to get the most from our linking efforts.

Good advice Mike – Thank You!

Building quality Google friendly links is an art, takes time, effort and skill. The Web is consumed with sites promising to up your site’s PR with backlinks – at a price. (Think however who is really reaping the benefit)

As can be seen by this article and from personal experience Google is however “smart”. We should all steer away from the easy way out – unfortunately there is no easy way if you want to generate traffic and stay in Google’s good books.

In the long run you are better off building links the natural way, to win Google’s favour, achieve and maintain a good solid PR. Stay with what works the natural way and reap the benefits.

Excellent article Mike!

You’re absolutely right about Google being smart…they’re very smart. People who try to trick them are only kidding and hurting themselves. As you said, take some extra time and do it right.

Thanks again for the valuable advice. Always learn something when I come here.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the tips. I do vary my link text but didn’t know about the AUIKDat tool. Time to do some more analysis and improve my rankings :-) Nice!

Hey Mike..awesome article as usual. I always come by and read your blog because you always remind me what I should constantly be doing..but don’t always, haha.

I’ve used your AUKDAT tool quite a few times but mostly for tweaking keyword density so I appreciate you pointing out the fact that we should also be linking to keywords other than our main targets. This is by far the best explanation I’ve read on a technique to specifically implement this. Thanks!

Hi Mike
nice advice in your post but once again I find what people say and do to get high rankings in the search engines quite amusing.
Why? Because I’ve got high search ranked pages in the 3 majors and at present 4 number 1 pages – and my site is relatively new.
No – I haven’t starting doing anything yet apart from writing new content pages that are unique (in a dog niche).
What no web2.0 social bookmarking, article writing, link exchanges and whatever?
No, just good, honest, helpful content.
Now that must tell a story … mustn’t it?

P.S. Mike, I’m just starting a WordPress blog so watch out (LOL)

Thanks Mike,

I like your comments about Google looking at the text around the keyword phrase versus just the phrase itself. They are very smart about what they do and your point is a very good one.

There are several areas of thoughts about varying text links but personally I like to do vary my anchor texts but I make sure that majority still uses my main keyword.
